MALE & FEMALE BLACK-FACED GRASSQUITS, ROCKLANDS BIRD SANCTUARY (MONTEGO BAY), ROCKLANDS RD, WILTSHIRE, JAMAICA, 12/12/2024 - NEW SPECIES TO LIFE LIST

   The first photo shows a male Black-faced Grassquit and the next two photos show female Black-faced Grassquits.  We can ID these birds as Black-faced Grassquits as follows
  • Both the male and female birds were identified as Black-faced Grassquits by the Merlin bird photo ID app.
  • Male Black-faced Grassquit: Black head and neck; short,conical black bill; dull olive green back; dark iris; pink legs
  • Female Black-faced Grassquit: dull olive green head, neck and back; grayish underparts; bill has dark upper mandible and pale lower mandible; pink legs

      The Black-faced Grassquit is a new species to our ebird Photographic Life List.









 




JAMAICAN ORIOLE AT FEEDER WITH ANOLE LOOKING ON, ROCKLANDS BIRD SANCTUARY (MONTEGO BAY), ROCKLANDS RD, WILTSHIRE, JAMAICA, 12/12/2024 - NEW SPECIES TO LIFE LIST

   We can ID this bird as a Jamaican Oriole as follows:
  • Was identified as a Jamaican Oriole by Merlin bird photo ID app.
  • Head and neck are olivaceous yellow (see 2nd & 3rd photos) with a black mask and throat to upper breast  and becomes more yellow to belly.
  • Black wings with large white patches.
  • Black tail.  
   The Jamaican Oriole is found in Jamaica and the Colombian island of San Andres.  A subspecies of the Jamaican Oriole formerly occurred on Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands, but is now extinct, making the species extirpated there.

   The Jamaican Oriole is a new species to our ebird Photographic Life List.

MALE & FEMALE ORANGEQUITS, ROCKLANDS BIRD SANCTUARY (MONTEGO BAY), ROCKLANDS RD, WILTSHIRE, JAMAICA, 12/12/2024 - NEW SPECIES TO LIFE LIST

   The first three photos show male Orangequits and the last three photos show female Orangequits.  We can ID  these birds as Orangequits as follows:
  • Both the male and female birds were identified as Orangequits by the Merlin photo ID app.
  • Male orangequit: All blue with brick orange throat.
  • Female orangequit: Brownish back (as much as we can see) and tail; bluish-gray underparts that become brownish towards the belly
   The Orangequit is endemic to Jamaica.  It is a new species to our ebird Photographic Life List.

   The first four photos show a male Red-billed Streamer tail and the last three photos a female Red-billed Streamer tail.
