ADULT FEMALE & JUVENILE COMMON SHELDUCKS, MUSSELBURGH, EAST LOTHIAN, SCOTLAND, UNITED KINGDOM, 7/17/2024 - NEW LIFE SPECIES
We can ID the duck on the right in the first photo as female Common Shelduck (the duck on the left in the first photo and in the second photo are juveniles) as follows:
- Reddish-pink bill with black tip and with no knob (only the male has a knob at base of the bill)
- Black head and neck
- Large black patch on white wing
- Chestnut patch between black patch and black neck continuing down flank
The Common Shelduck is a new species to our ebird Photographic Life List.
MALE VELVET SCOTER, MUSSELBURGH, EAST LOTHIAN, SCOTLAND, UNITED KINGDOM, 7/17/2024 - NEW LIFE SPECIES
We can ID this duck as a male Velvet Scoter as follows:
- Overall black
- White patch on face
- Large white wing patch. You can see this best in the second photo.
- Orange bill with pinkish tip (see second photo) and black knob
- Reddish-orange legs (see first and third photos where part of leg is showing)
The Velvet Scoter is a new species to our ebird Photographic Life List.
