JUVENILE EURASIAN CURLEW, MUSSELBURGH, EAST LOTHIAN, SCOTLAND, UNITED KINGDOM, 7/17/2024 - NEW LIFE SPECIES

   We can ID the large wader in the first two photos as a juvenile Eurasian Curlew as follows:
  • Upperparts are brown with whitish streaking
  • What we can see of the underparts is white with dark streaking
  • Long, downcurved, dark bill with pinkish base of the lower mandible
  • Dark eye with whitish eyering
  • Indistinct whitish supercillium 
   The Eurasian Curlew is a new species to our ebird Photographic Life List.

FIRST SUMMER COMMON GULL, MUSSELBURGH, EAST LOTHIAN, SCOTLAND, UNITED KINGDOM, 7/17/2024 - NEW LIFE SPECIES

   Even though this photo was taken at a long distance and is not quite clear we can still ID this gull as a First Summer Common Gull by comparison to a photo of such a gull in Cornell Lab's Birds of the World:
  • Light gray and white face with dark eye
  • Bill is grayish with yellowish tinge and black tip
  • Gray back
  • Belly and breast are white and gray
  • Primaries and tail are dark brown
   The Common Gull is a new species to our ebird Photographic Life List.
