   We can ID this dove as a Zenaida Dove as follows:
  • Very similar to the Mourning Dove, but is smaller and has a shorter, square-tipped tail rather than the long, pointed tail of the Mourning Dove.
  • Overall grayish-brown upper parts.
  • Large blue spot on side of neck.
  • Black splotches on the folded wing.
  • Short, black streak in back of the eye, with a longer black streak at the base of the cheek.
   The Zenaida Dove breeds throughout the Caribbean and the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula.

   The Zenaida Dove is a new species to our eBird Photographic Life List. Our eBird Life List now stands at 1,117.


 

SCALY-NAPED PIGEON, ROMNEY MANOR, OLD ROAD TOWN, ST KITTS, ST KITTS & NEVIS, 3/12/2024 - NEW SPECIES TO OUR LIFE LIST

   We can ID this pigeon as a Scaly-naped Pigeon as follows:
  • Red eye broadly framed by orange-peach orbital skin.
  • Large size.
  • Pink legs.
  • Two-toned bill: purple at the base and a cream tip.
  • Darkish overall with scally nape and neck sides.
   The Scaly-necked Pigeon is found in most islands of the Caribbean, except Jamaica and the Bahamas.  It is a very rare vagrant to Florida.  

   The Scaly-necked Pigeon is a new species to our eBird Photographic Life List.  Our eBird Life List now stands at 1,116.
