DUSKY NIGHTJAR, ROUTE 219, WITHIN SEVERAL MILES OF ENTRANCE TO IRAZU VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK, CARTAGO PROVINCE, COSTA RICA, 10/3/2022 - NEW SPECIES # 1,049 TO LIFE LIST
Photographed by flashlight via digiscoping with cell phone. We can ID this nightjar as a Dusky Nightjar as follows:
- Small and brownish with white markings
- Limited to highlands of central Costa Rica to westermost Panama
- Heard its voice: ''whip, wee-per-wee!''
The Dusky Nightjar is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,049.
MALE ACORN WOODPECKER, ROUTE 219, WITHIN SEVERAL MILES OF ENTRANCE TO IRAZU VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK, CARTAGO PROVINCE, COSTA RICA, 10/3/2022 - NEW SPECIES # 1,048 TO LIFE LIST
We can ID this woodpecker as an male Acorn Woodpecker as follows:
- Clown-faced woodpecker
- Red crown and white forehead
- Black and white face with white eyes
- Breast is white with black streaking
- Wings are dark with white patches
The Acorn Woodpecker is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,048.
JUVENILE BLACK-CAPPED FLYCATCHER, ROUTE 219, WITHIN SEVERAL MILES OF ENTRANCE TO IRAZU VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK, CARTAGO PROVINCE, COSTA RICA, 10/3/2022 - NEW SPECIES # 1,047 TO LIFE LIST4
Even though this is a poor photo, we can ID this tyrant flycatcher as a juvenile Black-capped Flycatcher as follows:
- Full black cap that includes the eyes
- Seen in Costa Rica highlands. It is endemic to Costa Rica and Panama highlands
- Whitish eyering
- Brownish upperparts (juvenile). Because of poor lighting we can just bearly make out one of its wing bars
- Whitish throat
- Pale buffish-cinnamon underpants
