FEMALE SOOTY THRUSH, ROUTE 219, WITHIN SEVERAL MILES OF ENTRANCE TO IRAZU VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK, CARTAGO PROVINCE, COSTA RICA, 10/3/2022 - NEW SPECIES # 1,046 TO LIFE LIST

   We can ID this bird as a female Sooty Thrush as follows:
  • Yellow-orange bill
  • Brownish head with dark face mask, otherwise brownish and gray
   The Sooty Thrush is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,046.








 

MALE SLATY FLOWERPIERCER, ROUTE 219, WITHIN SEVERAL MILES OF ENTRANCE TO IRAZU VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK, CARTAGO PROVINCE, COSTA RICA, 10/3/2022 - NEW SPECIES # 1,045 TO LIFE LIST

     We can ID this bird as a male Slaty Flowerpiercer as follows:
  • Upper mandible of bill is noticebly hooked and lower mandible is upturned (see 2nd photo)
  • Overall plain gray, with head, wings we can see and tail a darker gray than light gray underparts
  • Dark eyes
   The Slaty Flowerpiercer is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,045.
