WINTER WREN (NEW SPECIES # 1,009), ASHBRIDGE'S BAY PARK, TORONTO, ONTARIO, 10/8/2021

   We can identify this bird as a Winter Wren as follows:
  • Overall chocolate brown color (the similar House Wren is lighter, more grayish brown)
  • Distinct supercilium (the House Wren has an indistinct supercilium)
  • Short, thin and straight bill (the House Wren has a slightly downcurved bill)
  • Short, cocked-up tail
   Winter Wrens breed in the coniferous forests from British Columbia east to Newfoundland, and south to New England and the Great Lakes region.  Winters are spent across the eastern half of the U.S., south to the Gulf Coast.  May be seen in the Fall and Winter in the west.

   The Winter Wren is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,009.
