RED-CROWNED PARROT, DEAN PARK HISTORIC DISTRICT, FT. MYERS,FLORIDA, 4/1/2021
We can ID this parrot as a Red-crowned Parrot ( also called Red-crowned Amazon, Green-cheeked Amazon and Mexican Red-headed Parrot) as follows:
- Overall green with a bright red forehead and crown
- Light green cheeks
- Blue behind ears
- Light yellow-tipped tail ( this can be seen in first two photos)
- Yellow iris surrounded by bright whitish eyering
The Red-crowned Parrot is native to Northeastern Mexico and possibly to the southern tip of Texas. There are feral populations of this parrot in California, Puerto Rico, Florida and Hawaii. The Red-crowned Parrot is an endangered species Mexico. It is believed that the feral population in the U.S. exceeds the native population in Mexico.
The Red-crowned Parrot is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,002.
