CACKLING GOOSE, REESOR POND, REESOR RD,MARKHAM,ONTARIO, 1O/10/2020
It was reported on ebird that there were several Cackling Geese at Reesor Pond among 1000 + Canada Geese. So on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020 I went to Reesor Pond to see if I could find one. I took numerous photos and have been going through them to find a Cackling Goose. The smaller goose on the right in the photo below is a Cackling Goose; the other larger geese in the photo are Canada Geese.
We can ID this smaller goose on the right in the photo as a Cackling Goose as follows:
We can ID this smaller goose on the right in the photo as a Cackling Goose as follows:
- Small size. As can seen in the photo the Cackling Goose is considerably smaller than the Canada Geese nearby.
- Short, stubby bill.
- Short neck. As can be seen in the photo, the Cackling Goose has a much shorter neck than the Canada Geese.
- Steep forehead.
- White chin strap with almost no black under chin compared to Canada Goose.
The four Cackling Goose subspecies were at one time considered to be the smallest subspecies of the Canada Goose. These four smaller subspecies were recognized as a separate species, the Cackling Goose, due their genetic differences from the Canada Goose.
The Cackling Goose is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 986A.
