EURASIAN SPOONBILL, TAGUS ESTUARY,LISBON,PORTUGAL, 9/29/2019

   These photos were taken into the sun with the spoonbill bills into the water, so we could not get good photos of the birds or their bills.  However, we can still ID these birds as Eurasian Spoonbills as follows:
  • Overall white color
  • Black legs
  • Large bird, with stocky, thickest overall appearance
  • Although we could not make out much detail of the bills, we could tell that they were long (left spoonbill in first photo)
  • Merlin bird photo ID app and our guide identified this bird as a Eurasian Spoonbill

   The Eurasian Spoonbill is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 927.

NONBREEDING COMMON RINGED PLOVER OR RINGED PLOVER, TAGUS ESTUARY,LISBON,PORTUGAL, 9/29/2019

   We can ID this plover as a nonbreeding Common Ringed Plover or Ringed Plover as follows:
  • Brown cap, white forehead, black mask around eyes and white eyebrow
  • Short, black bill
  • Orange legs
  • Brown-breasted upperparts
  • Blackish neckband
  • Whitish underparts

   The Common Ringed Plover or Ringed Plover is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 926.

NONBREEDING LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, TAGUS ESTUARY,LISBON,PORTUGAL, 9/29/2019

   We can ID this gull as a nonbreeding Lesser Black-backed Gull as follows:
  • Black wings and back
  • Yellow bill with red spot
  • Greyish head
  • Yellow legs
  • Grey barring on neck

   The Lesser Black-backed Gull is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 925.




NONBREEDING BLACK-TAILED GODWIT, TAGUS ESTUARY,LISBON,PORTUGAL, 9/29/2019

   We can ID this sandpiper as a nonbreeding Black-tailed Godwit as follows:
  • Long, very slightly upcurved bill is pink towards base and black towards tip
  • Grey legs
  • Uniform (no baring) brownish upperparts, head, neck and breast
  • Whitish belly

   The Black-tailed Godwit is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 924.






NONBREEDING COMMON REDSHANK, TAGUS ESTUARY,LISBON,PORTUGAL, 9/29/2019

   We can ID this sandpiper as a nonbreeding Common Redshank ( Tringa totanus) as follows:
  • Brown upperparts, head and neck
  • Whitish underparts, spotted at flanks
  • Red legs
  • Straight bill is red towards base and black towards tip

   The Common Redshank is a new species in our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 923.
