SQUIRREL CUCKOO (PIAYA CAYANA), CERRO GAITAL NATIONAL PARK,EL VALLE DE ANTON,COCLE PROVINCE,PANAMA, 5/24/2019
We can ID this cuckoo as a Squirrel Cuckoo as follows:
- Rufous upperparts and head, becoming paler on throat
- Greenish orbital skin surrounding yellowish iris
- Extremely long, graduated tail. Underside of tail is blackish with broad white tips.
- Yellowish bill
- Gray lower breast and blackish belly
The Squirrel Cuckoo is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 875.
MALE GREEN HERMIT (PHAETHORNIS GUY), CERRO GAITAL NATIONAL PARK, EL VALLE DE ANTON,COCLE PROVINCE,PANAMA, 5/24/2019
We can ID this hummingbird as a male Green Hermit as follows:
- Blue-green upperparts (we can't see underparts). How much is blue or green depends on the lighting.
- Very long, reddish, downcurved bill.
- Long, graduated tail in which the central pair of feathers are elongated and white-tipped.
- Dark mask through the eye with buff stripes above and below.
The Green Hermit is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 874.
