PIED-BILL GREBE, EAGLE LAKES COMMUNITY PARK, NAPLES, FL

   This is the time of year when Pied-billed Grebes molt from nonbreeding plumage to breeding plumage.  This grebe has the whitish bill with black ring and  more prominent white eyering of the breeding grebe, but not yet the black neck of the breeding grebe.

   We thought the Boat-tailed Grackle and Loggerhead Shrike on the same tree made an interesting photo.  The second photo (Boat-tailed Grackle) and third photo (Loggerhead Shrike) are closeups of the two birds.

DOWNY WOODPECKER, FREEDOM MEMORIAL PARK, NAPLES, FL

   We could ID this woodpecker as a Downy Woodpecker and not a Hairy Woodpecker by its very small size (estimated at 6" +-).




RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS IN NEST, FREEDOM MEMORIAL PARK, NAPLES, FL

      This morning we birded with a group at Freedom Memorial Park.  The highlight of the trip was sighting a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks in their nest.  Red-shouldered Hawks generally return to the same nesting territory year after year.  Both the male and female build the nest or refurbish a prior years nest.
