MALE NUTTALL'S WOODPECKER, SYCAMORE CANYON, WHITTIER, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, 12/20/2023 - NEW LIFE SPECIES

   We can ID this woodpecker as a male Nuttall's Woodpecker as follows:

• Red hind crown, black fore crown and white forehead
• Solid black on upper back extending up nape to red crown
• Black face with white stripes above and below the eye.  The white stripe above the eye extends down the side of the neck.
• White underparts with black spots
• Black upperparts with white stripes
• Black uppertail

   Nuttall's Woodpecker is a new species to our ebird Photographic Life List.  Our ebird Life List now stands at 1,111.
