We can ID this hummingbird as a male Allen's Hummingbird (Orange-rumped) as follows:
- Green back and crown with rufous rump, flanks, face and tail.
- Large iridescent throat patch
- As much as we can see of the breast is white.
- White spot behind eye
- Some Allen's Hummingbirds are year-round residents of California, but the very similar Rufous Hummingbird is a migrant, thus it would not normally be seen in Los Angeles County in December.
Allen's Hummingbird is a new species to our ebird Photographic Life List. Our ebird Life List now stands at 1,108.
