We can ID this tern as a Large-billed Tern as follows:
- Large, yellow bill with black tip
- Black crown and ear coverts
- Black nape (this can be seen in the second photo)
- Gray upperparts
- White underparts
- Yellow legs
- Short tail
The Large-billed Tern is found in most of South America (east of the Andes and north of the Pampas). It has occurred as a vagrant in Aruba, Bermuda, Panama and the United States. Its natural habitats are rivers and freshwater lakes.
The Large-billed Tern is a new species to our Photographic Life List. Our ebird Life List now stands at 1,083.
