This Piping Plover chick has three bands, two colored bands on its left leg and on its right leg, a USGS aluminum band with a unique 9-digit number (which couldn't be read in the photos). The chicks are banded between five and sixteen days of age. Every sibling in a brood gets the same colors (2 or 3).
The colored bands allow recognition of individuals from a distance. The orange band indicates that the bird is from the Great Lakes.
