We can ID this woodpecker as a male Hairy Woodpecker as follows:
- Large size of woodpecker, compared to Downy Woodpecker. We were fairly close to the woodpecker, so we could tell its size.
- Large bill which looks like a railroad spike, rather than the dainty and much smaller bill of a Downy Woodpecker.
- Red patch on back of head is split in two. This occurs often on a male Hairy Woodpecker, but not on a Downy Woodpecker..
- All white outer tail feathers, compared to the Downy's spotted ones.
