   We can ID this bird as a  male Sooty Grouse as follows:

• Heard its distinctive mating call: a low-pitched, pulsing hoot
• Large, chicken-like body with small head
• Slate gray and black with white speckles
• Yellow-orange comb of bare skin above eyes
• Short bill

   The Sooty Grouse is a new species to our Photographic Life List,  which now stands at 1,025.
