We can ID this small shorebird as a female Wilson's Phalarope in breeding plumage as follows:

  • Gray cap and white eyebrow
  • Peachy-orange neck with broad black stripe that ends at eye
  • Gray-and-rufous back, as much as can be seen
  • Long, thin, straight and black bill (you can make out the bill better in second photo)
  • White underparts

In the breeding season a female Wilson's Phalarope is more colorful than the male.  Wilson's Phalarope breeds in the prairies of North America in Western Canada and the western U.S., with isolated breeding areas in Eastern Canada, including Ontario and New Brunswick.  It is migratory, wintering in inland salt lakes near the Andes in Argentina.

Wilson's Phalarope is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,006.
