We can ID this bird as a Veery as follows:
- Reddish-brown upperparts
- Grey flanks
- Incomplete and faint grey eyering
- Grey lores (area between eye and bill) with reddish-brown wash (see second photo)
- Pinkish legs - you can just make out the pinkish color in the second photo
- Straight bill
- The Veery is in the Catharus genus of birds in the thrush family. This genus also includes the Grey-cheeked Thrush, Bicknell's Thrush, Swainson's Thrush and Hermit Thrush. These thrushes are similar in appearance to the Veery. The grey flanks and grey lores with reddish-brown wash differentiate the Veery from the other Catharus thrushes.
The Veery breeds in deciduous forests across southern Canada and the northern U.S. These birds migrate for the winter to eastern South America. Veery's mainly eat insects and berries.
The Veery is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 851.
