The holes on the side of the riverbank were made by catfish. During spawning, catfish will dig a hole in the riverbank as it is submerged in water. The female catfish lays eggs in the hole and the male will guard the eggs. The eggs hatch in six to ten days. The catfish fry (baby catfish) will remain in the nest for about a week and then leave the hole, as does the male catfish.
