We can ID this woodpecker as the Yucatan subspecies of the Golden-fronted Woodpecker as follows:
- On the the Yucatan subspecies of the Golden-fronted Woodpecker the cap, nape and lore are red, while in other subspecies of this woodpecker in other locations they are yellow, golden or orange
- Finely barred black and white upperparts (black bars are wider)
- Grayish-black bill
- Grayish head, breast and flanks
- Black and White barred tail (you can just make this out)
- Reddish vent
The Golden-fronted Woodpecker is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 802.
