We can ID this woodpecker as a Yucatan Woodpecker as follows:
- Red cap from eye to nape
- Black and white barring on back, wings and tail. The white barring is thicker than in the very similar Golden-fronted Woodpecker (see post of Golden-fronted Woodpecker)
- Light grey on face and underparts
- Yellow at the bill base (you can just make this out in first photo)
- The bill is relatively short compared to the bill of the Golden-fronted Woodpecker (see post of Golden-fronted Woodpecker)
The Yucatan Woodpecker is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 814.
