We can ID this woodpecker as a Hairy Woodpecker rather than a Downy Woodpecker because of its relatively large size (9" vs. 6 1/2"). The woodpecker was close enough so we could judge its size. Another indicator that this woodpecker is a Hairy Woodpecker is that the eyebrows are broken by black in the back of the head. You can see the in the first photo and last two photos. In a Downy Woodpecker the eyebrows are continuos in the back of the head.
